Matthew Humphreys

Matthew Humphreys explores the human condition, highlighting two key senses, sight and hearing, using these to present to the perceiver a discourse, which communicates and disseminates emotional states.

He is fascinated with technology and its intersection with experience. Forming relationships with cameras, following routines, he finds his inspiration and gathers source material; this is where translation and creation occurs, often expanding this material into installations.

His family, social relationships and the everyday are captured with his lens; this is coupled with research that delves into language, forms of communication, historicizing and the technical developments of mediums he employs.

Humphreys’ documentary video background informs his artistic practice, his attentive camera catches the most intimate moments and transforms them into universally engaging themes.

Humphreys’ holds a MA in Fine Art, Central Saint Martins 2013 and a BA in Film and Video, Newport Film School 2002. He is a current recipient of Arts Council of England, Grants for the Arts Award. He was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2014 and since then highlights include winning the Celeste Prize, completing a year long residency at The Florence Trust and taking part in shows in the UK, Italy, Tehran and New York. His film poem The Lost Reels 2002, has won numerous awards and still gets screened internationally to this date.  Recent press includes interview on Xinhua Television News (Chinese State Media), Aesthetica Magazine, Art Licks Magazine, Huffington Post, Juliet Art and featured on The Photographers Gallery website.
