FT06 - Derek Boshier ~ 99 Cent War

Statement
99 Cent War is Derek Boshier’s personal response to the current conflict in Iraq.
Boshier is a British born artist who has spent much of the past twenty five years living and working in the United States. This is not the first time that American foreign policy has been the subject of his work and his best work combines accessibility with a keen political edge.
Alongside this preoccupation there is a fascination and affection for American popular culture that stretches back to Derek Boshier’s emergence as a key figure in the British Pop Art movement in the 1960’s. These twin themes are played out in the installation 99 Cent War, an installation specifically conceived with the magnificent grade 1 listed interior of Saint Saviours Church, Highbury in mind. The stark monochrome drawings contrast with the unusual decorative stonework and stained glass of the church.
